Let's get real here. Regardless of where beginners come from — be it never having seen a kettlebell, having avoided gyms like the plague, or even a fitness geek whose just never used a kettlebell — nobody wants to get hurt. Who can blame them? Injuries don't just sideline fitness goals, they put a serious damper on life! Even a short hiatus can threaten hard won lean muscle and metabolic efficiency.

A huge hello! One thing I've noted over 15+ years of teaching kettlebells is that everyone is always in such a hurry to pick up the bells! For people with more fitness under their belt, a good teaching progression allows that. However, a huge number of others come in with zero or minimal exercise experience — having decided that now was the time to make a change — or are coming back from a long break. But handing them a kettlebell prematurely isn't responsible and can be counterproductive. They don't yet have a foundation to know where they are in space, what to feel, how to stabilize and how to prevent unwanted movement. Load cements patterns so starting with good ones is the best way to avoid needing to fix things later. BEFORE THE IRON (BTI) is my passion project, to give everyone an easy & affordable starting place that will hopefully inspire a lifetime of living fitter.
